In 2025, the year of the Osaka–Kansai Expo, Asahi Shimbun Middle East Holdings held a photo exhibition at The Asahi Shimbun Osaka Head Office showcasing the long standing relationship between the UAE and Japan. Visitors stopped to admire 29 rare press photographs that captured key moments over the decades.
In Japan, the UAE is often seen as a “luxurious, futuristic city,” while older impressions such as a “country of oil” or a “desert nation” still persist. This photo exhibition was therefore designed to help the Japanese public gain a deeper understanding of the UAE by showcasing more than 50 years of cultural and economic exchange between the two countries since the UAE’s founding.
Drawing on The Asahi Shimbun’s extensive archives accumulated since its founding in 1879, the photo exhibition featured rare images such as the Abu Dhabi Pavilion at Expo ’70, the 1990 visit to Japan by H.H. President Zayed of the UAE, and the warm welcome extended to Japan’s then Crown Prince and Princess during their 1995 visit to the UAE.
